On behalf of Association of the Families of Sahrawi Prisoners and Disappeared (AFAPREDESA) I have the honor to bring to your knowledge the following:
On Monday November 11, 2013, Member States of the United Nations will decide the next composition of the Human Rights Council for the period 2014-2016.
The Kingdom of Morocco is a candidate.
We believe it would be an insult to the Sahrawi victims of Morocco’s human rights abuses, to the UN Charter and to the Universal Declaration on Human Rights if this country is elected while it continues:
1. To illegally occupy Western Sahara in flagrant violation of the right to self determination.
2. To violate with impunity the most basic human rights of the Saharawi population as it was documented by UN, AU, and human rights organizations (The African Union Commission for Human and Peoples' Rights, Amnesty International, Robert F. Kennedy Center, the report of the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, the recent report of special Rapporteur of the European Parliament for the Sahel, Human Rights Watch, the Report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights of 2006, the U.S. State Department...)
3. To lie on the fate of Saharawi victims of enforced disappearances[1].
The election of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN Human Rights Council would be a serious setback to the efforts so far made to protect the Saharawi people's human rights.
